Joining forces for sustainability: Rotovia Deventer & Smart Energy Deventer
“We’ve implemented the easier energy-saving measures. Now, it’s time for the next step.”
At Rotovia, sustainability and effective energy management aren’t just ideals -they’re integral parts of our daily operations across all our facilities. In a recent interview, Bjorn de Grutter, director of our Deventer plant, shared how strategic collaboration with partner companies advances Rotovia’ s broader sustainability goals.
From initial actions to data-driven strategies
Bjorn explained that Rotovia Deventer has already undertaken important steps, including installing solar panels on our facility’s roof, optimizing burner settings, detecting and addressing air leaks, reducing gas consumption, and transitioning fully to LED lighting. The solar installation currently generates energy primarily used during production hours, cutting peak electricity demand. Additionally, meticulous burner adjustments have improved thermal efficiency, directly reducing overall gas consumption. These initial actions provided significant improvements, but Bjorn stressed that the next phase requires deeper analysis driven by precise data and specialized expertise.

Strength through collaborative networks
Collaboration has been a key element of Rotovia Deventer’s approach. Bjorn specifically mentioned the plant’s active engagement with Smart Energy Deventer, which provided connections leading to an upcoming energy scan – critical for future planning. Additionally, involvement with regional initiatives like GROHW (Green Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Wasteheat production) has enabled the facility to explore innovative solutions and collective strategies for managing grid congestion and accelerating energy transitions.
Circular economy and forward-thinking innovations
Looking ahead, Bjorn emphasized a realistic yet ambitious approach. While the high cost of hydrogen remains a current barrier, Rotovia actively investigates its viability alongside expanded solar panel arrays and battery storage solutions. Another significant step forward is the implementation of our take-back service, reflecting our commitment to circular economy principles—recycling products and reusing materials sustainably.
