HDPE rotomolding

In rotomolding, HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a commonly used material. High-density polyethylene (HDPE plastic) is the stiffest type of PE. It is a stronger and stiffer polyethylene than LDPE (low-density polyethylene) or LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene). The HDPE for rotational molding is commonly used to manufacture products such as storage tanks. HDPE rotomolding results in very strong and durable products. It also is a very lightweight material, making it suitable for products in all kinds of industries, such as building and construction and leisure.

HDPE rotational molding process

The HDPE rotational molding process consists of six steps. It of course all starts with the material, HDPE in this case. Plastic HDPE granules are reduced in size using a micro-pelletizer or pulverizer. If needed, we can add additives to color or modify the material. The second step in HDPE rotomolding is to insert the pulverized material in the mould that was designed for the product. If there are any things that need to be moulded into the product, such as metal inserts, they are also put in the mould. The mould is then heated and rotated, causing the HDPE to melt and spread over the mould in an even layer. Once that is done, it is time to cool the heated part down so the material can solidify in the mould and removed from it. The last step in the HDPE rotational molding process is the finishing and assembling of the product.

HDPE molding, the benefits

HDPE molding comes with several benefits:

  • The material is very lightweight, so the rotomolded product helps to reduce the overall weight of the whole product. In vehicles it can for example improve fuel efficiency.
  • HDPE rotomolding products are very durable and resistant to impact, which can for example be of great importance for tanks in building and construction vehicles.
  • The material is resistant of corrosion and UV radiation.
  • HDPE can be used to create complex shapes. Because of the rotomoulding process, the final product is seamless, and the risk of cracks and leaks is eliminated.
